ROMAN JEWELERS NAMED SEMI-FINALIST FOR NEW JERSEY FAMILY BUSINESS OF THE YEAR
(October 24, 2008 – Flemington, NJ)
Roman Jewelers of Flemington and Bridgewater Commons Mall was named a semi-finalist for the 2008 New Jersey Family Business Award. The major sponsors of the award included NJ Monthly Magazine, PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., and the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Roman Jewelers was recognized in the category for businesses with annual sales of up to $10 million and was the only company in Hunterdon County to receive this honor.
The award ceremony took place on October 7, 2008, at the Crystal Plaza in Livingston, New Jersey. Nina Mitchell Wells, Secretary of State for New Jersey, delivered the opening remarks at the award luncheon. Brenda Blackmon, co-anchor of “My 9 News” on WOR-TV, served as master of ceremonies.
The Shor family, owners of Roman Jewelers, also received a personal letter of congratulations from New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine in acknowledgment of the award.
The year 2008 marked the sixteenth anniversary of the New Jersey Family Business of the Year Award. A total of 47 New Jersey companies were nominated for the competition. Winners were selected based on extensive criteria, including the number of family generations involved in the business, innovation, longevity, ability to overcome challenges, overall success, and community involvement.
Roman Jewelers is a fourth-generation family business that began at the end of the 19th century in Russia, founded by Roman Shor’s grandfather, Jacob. Roman’s father continued the business in Russia before Roman and Sophie Shor emigrated to Flemington, New Jersey, where they opened their business in 1989.
Their daughter, Lucy Zimmerman, serves as general manager for both the Flemington and Bridgewater locations and represents the fourth generation of Roman Jewelers.

RESTORING OLD FAMILY JEWELS
Restoring Old Family Jewels for the Holidays: Flemington Jewelry Store Turning Old Treasures into Meaningful Gifts
(November 29, 2006 – Flemington, NJ)
Finding the perfect gift this holiday season may be no further than a peek into your jewelry box. Perhaps you have an old heirloom piece of jewelry passed down from a relative that is awaiting new life. Roman Jewelers in Flemington is transforming sentimental pieces from the past into beautiful, meaningful treasures through custom redesign.
Jess Gebauer, a bench jeweler at Roman Jewelers, lost her grandmother when she was in the second grade. When she was given her grandmother’s engagement ring, she knew she wanted to wear it on the special day when her now-husband asked her to marry him.
“The ring meant so much to me. I wore the original for quite some time, but then decided I wanted to make it my own and still have the grandmother I loved so much be a part of it,” said Gebauer.
She removed the original stones and custom-designed a new setting to create a ring that reflected her personal style. “Every time I look at my ring, it makes me feel so good because I turned it into something that I love so much, and yet I know my grandmother is such a part of it. It is so sentimental and meaningful to me.”
Gebauer wasn’t finished. She then took the original setting, reset it with a sapphire in the center and two diamonds on the sides, and gave it to her mother as a birthday gift.
“I was able to give this ring that meant so much to all of us two new lives. Now my mom can pass hers on to her grandchildren, and I can do the same,” she added.
Many others are choosing to do the same. Recently widowed, Sandy Heimberg of Branchburg had her engagement ring redesigned.
“My ring meant so much to me because of all the memories I had with my husband Jeff, but I wasn’t sure what to do with it after I lost him. I sat with a designer who completely changed its look while keeping the original stone. It’s not only beautiful, but it allows me to have my husband with me every day,” said Heimberg.
Heimberg also had a tie tack that originally belonged to her husband’s grandfather transformed into a unique pendant, which she now wears as a necklace.
“I know if Jeff were here to see these beautiful pieces of jewelry, he would be so proud. They are not only amazing to look at, but they are incredibly meaningful,” she said.

SOPHIE SHOR ELECTED TO BOARD OF HMC TRUSTEES
Hunterdon County Jeweler Elected to Board of Trustees for Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation
(July 25, 2006, Flemington, NJ)
She has spent years of her professional life giving back to her community, especially in healthcare. Now Sophie Shor, Vice President of Roman Jewelers, is continuing her passion in an official capacity. Shor has been elected as a new member of the Board of Trustees for the Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation.
Shor says it has long been her aspiration to promote a healthy lifestyle for the citizens of Hunterdon County and surrounding towns. “While working on fundraising projects for the Hunterdon Medical Center, I have become acutely aware of the healthcare needs of our county. I have had the privilege of supporting initiatives in the areas of women’s heart health, breast cancer, and maternity facilities. I am extremely appreciative of the opportunity to work with the other members of the Board of Trustees on healthcare and illness prevention programs for our community.”
As Chair of the Foundation's Crystal Ball Committee last year, Shor helped raise $225,000 for Hunterdon Medical Center. Roman Jewelers donated a cardiac monitor for special-needs newborns at the hospital and has held special fundraising sales at its Flemington store for the sole purpose of purchasing equipment for Hunterdon Medical Center.
When deciding on a new Board member, G. Meredith Betz, Executive Vice President of the Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation, said Shor was the perfect choice. “Sophie has such strong leadership and marketing skills, which we have seen time and again not only through successful fundraising events but through her own business. She is an ambassador for this hospital everywhere she goes and is always looking for the next thing she can do to help those who need and use our services. Her kind nature and selfless spirit encompass everything this foundation stands for.”
