Why Diamonds are the Ideal Symbol of Love and Commitment
Diamond Producers Association
Everyone knows that a diamond is the ultimate way to mark an engagement — but there are actually specific reasons why this precious gemstone is the ideal symbol of love — of what is most precious and meaningful in our lives. In the midst of a very important wedding season, we asked fine jewelry expert Tanya Dukes about the key characteristics that explain why diamonds have been chosen to mark engagements since 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy with the first recorded diamond engagement ring. Here are five reasons diamonds will always be the ideal symbol of commitment:
Diamonds Are Unique
When it comes to love, we all have our own unique stories — so it’s only natural that an engagement should be represented with a one-of-a-kind gem. Given the extreme conditions under which diamonds are created, followed by their long, intense journey, means every diamond bears unique markers of its formation. These slight imperfections — that on a polished stone are visible only through a loupe — are what makes them truly individual. “While brilliant polished diamonds may look similar to the naked eye, every diamond is unique on the inside. Each has its own birthmarks, its own growth patterns and its own personality,” Duke explains. “So when you find the diamond that speaks to your heart and feels like a reflection of your relationship — there is a real reason why you feel drawn to it.”
Diamonds Are Natural
When you start to learn about how diamonds are formed, their arduous journey to the earth’s surface, let alone the ability to then find a gem quality diamond of any size, you begin to understand why they are miracles of nature. “Most diamonds were formed between 1–3 billion years ago — before the dinosaurs — more than 100 miles underground. They catapulted to the earth’s surface via ancient volcanic eruptions, withstanding the most extreme heat and pressure on their journey. That alone defies belief,” says Dukes. The fact that diamonds are so strong, resilient and enduring, “makes them such a fitting representation of love and commitment.” That’s why it makes perfect sense that we honor and celebrate this rare occasion with a similarly rare gem.
Diamonds Are Valuable
As a finite natural resource, diamonds are inherently valuable. In fact, one of the top producing mines in the world — the argyle diamond mine in Western Australia, where 90% of the world’s rare pink diamonds have been found — is set to close in three years. Gem-quality diamonds — because of their rarity and scarcity — are the world’s most portable form of wealth, and they not only hold their value, it increases over time. However, the emotional value sets it apart as well. ”Your diamond ring is connected to your relationship, it’s present as you make memories, and it’s with you as your love story deepens and evolves,” says Dukes. “Diamond jewelry is one of the only luxury items that becomes more valuable to you the more it is worn.”
Diamonds Are Timeless
Along with your loved ones, “diamonds are your daily companions,” Dukes points out. “And their brilliance never dulls and never gets old!” While trends come and go, the sparkle of a diamond is something that will always be in style. Diamond jewelry also carries with it the promise of becoming a family heirloom. The significance of the love that a diamond represents, and the fact that it touches our skin, means that the diamonds themselves become imbued with our memories, and are a physical link between generations. “Diamond jewelry connects your love story to those that will follow after.”
Diamonds Are Universal
While their rarity and beauty makes them valuable, their variety and versatility means there are diamond engagement ring designs that fit every budget. “There shouldn’t be an intimidation factor when it comes to the price point of diamonds,” says Dukes. “Whether you choose a three-stone ring, a solitaire, a halo or a pavé diamond design, you can achieve a beautiful look that reflects your style and your budget.”

Designer Engagement Rings & Wedding Bands
Designer engagement rings and wedding bands are made by top branded designers. Each designer offers a unique feel and style. Designer engagement rings are often offered with a matching wedding band. Uniqueness, quality, and attention to every detail during the manufacturing process make designer engagement rings and weddings bands particularly special. Top designers also offer incomparable beauty that you cannot find anywhere else. Roman Jewelers offers designer engagement rings and wedding bands from Tacori, Simon G., Gabriel, and our own bridal line, Romanza.Romanza Designer Engagement Rings and Wedding bands Romanza is Roman Jewelers’ exclusive line of designer engagement rings and wedding bands. The diamonds in Romanza rings are unmistakably more brilliant than in other bridal jewelry. The Romanza bridal jewelry line is special because the pieces are manufactured using a technique called the die-struck process. Unlike casting, during the die-struck process, a sheet of precious metal (gold or platinum) is forged into a die under pressure. This produces a stronger, more durable metal than cast jewelry and allows for a higher polish. The combination of these elements creates an engagement ring or wedding band with diamond brilliance amplified in intensity.[vc_column width="1/4"][vc_single_image image="455" img_size="full"][vc_column width="3/4"]Tacori Designer Engagement Rings and Wedding bands We love Tacori engagement rings and wedding bands, especially because of their distinctive crescent design. What you Need to Know about Engagement Rings
An engagement ring is one of the most important pieces of jewelry that a woman will wear in her lifetime. Because of that, shopping for an engagement ring can be extremely difficult; just how are you supposed to pick a piece of jewelry to represent an eternal love? Luckily, there are certain helpful facts that make the task of shopping for an engagement ring seem much less daunting. Let’s start with the diamond. Choosing a diamond is one of the hardest parts of choosing an engagement ring, because it requires the most consideration. One of the most common ways to evaluate the quality of a diamond is by looking at “the 4 C’s”: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. It’s important to note that, due to other factors, two diamonds graded equally along the 4 C’s are not necessarily equal in quality or value. Still, the 4 C’s are important to consider when generally determining what quality diamond you would like to purchase. Beyond the 4 C’s, you must consider what shape of diamond you’d like to choose. Diamonds come in different shapes—round, princess, pear, and oval shapes, as well as many others. It is important to choose a diamond shape that not only reflects the style of the wearer, but also complements the ring’s setting and the wearer’s hand. Beyond the diamond, you must choose a type of precious metal for the setting of the engagement ring. There are many options when it comes to precious metals, and they come in a variety of different colors and prices. The preference of the wearer and price of the precious metal are of importance in this selection. However, one should also consider choosing a metal that matches the skin tone of the wearer. The type of setting, which is the method by which an engagement ring’s diamond is secured in the ring, is another component to consider when choosing an engagement ring. The most common type of ring setting is a prong setting in which a small, claw-like prongs grip the diamond to hold it in place. Other setting types include bezel, tension, pavé, halo, flush, and many others, each with its own unique look and attributes. The most important thing to keep in mind when selecting an engagement ring is the woman who will be wearing it. Would your lady prefer a plain band or one studded with smaller jewels? Does she like more discrete or more extravagant jewelry pieces? Knowing and keeping the wearer’s preferences in mind will make the process of finding the right engagement ring much easier, and you’ll be sure to find her a ring she will love. Engagement Ring Trends Include Sapphire
For a "Royal Look" we suggest an Oval Sapphire, like this one from Tacori
It didn’t start with Kate Middleton, couples have always looked for a meaninful engagement ring as unique as their love, and the trend continues…. many are choosing Sapphires and other stones for engagement rings. A stunningOval Sapphiresits at the center of Kate Middleton’s ring, which was previously Princess Diana’s. Sapphire- represents truth, sincerity and constancy. The ring is encircled with a Halo of diamonds.
Sapphires have been prized as great gemstones since 800BC and have beenwornby royalty throughout history. King Solomon wore a sapphire ring, and the British Crown Jewels are full of large blue Sapphires, the mark of prudent and wise rulers.
Ever since Prince Charles has given Princess Diana a Sapphire engagement ring, more and more couples have decided to adopt this old tradition to the present day. Sapphire stands for truth, compatibility, commitment, and mutual understanding. A perfect, meaningful choice for engaged couples, and Sapphire is also recommended for a couple’s 5th or 45th anniversaries.
The sapphire has for a long time, been identified with chastity, piety, and repentance. It brings wisdom and truth, increases perception and the understanding of justice. It helps find peace of mind and serenity and promotes a life of sincerity, helping preserve one’s innocence while learning life’s truths. Sapphires also are associated with romantic love, representing fidelity and romantic devotion. I it also used for a quest to increase one’s faith, hope, and joy, and to keep thoughts pure and heavenly

The Radiant Diamond and why the cut is critical
Radiant shape is a bit more rare than some others and recently, at Roman Jewelers, we’ve been getting more and more requests for them because couples like the more “antique” look but also the uniqueness and brilliance of the stone. For maximum brilliance and a optimum diamond fire, a precise cut is crucial for a radiant diamond shape. The perfection of the cut, and thetalent of the diamond cutter creates the heavy reflection and refraction within the stone. An improperly cut diamond will have a lower value and less brilliant appearance that dampens the effect of its unusual shape. Most consumers assume that a proper radiant cut must be square with an equal length-to-width ratio, but in fact many stunning radiant cuts are rectangular; the exact proportions are a matter of personal preference which is why working with a knowledgeable jeweler is key and viewing many similar stones is an important part of the process when selecting this stone. Please do not buy a radiant cut on the internet, it would be doing a huge disservice to the diamond and to the buyer. The modern radiant shape was perfected by Henry Grossbard in 1977 when he successfully blended the geometry of emerald cut with the brilliance of the classic round diamond. A radiant cut is, basically, a hybrid stone that is generally square or rectangular but with slightly cropped corners that contribute to its eye-catching sparkle. Cut is everything in this stone and working with a jeweler that understands Fancy cuts is important to get the best value and diamond that is out there. Radiant cut diamonds are similar to three other familiar diamond shapes: but at the same time, the radiant cut is substantially different from each one and brings its own uniqueness to extraordinary pieces of jewelry. The cropped corners of the radiant cut immediately distinguish it from the sharp princess cut. A closer look, however, reveals that the radiant cut has a more uniform series of facets lending it a smooth sparkle, while princess cut diamonds have a starburst or X-shaped facet pattern. In comparison to the emerald cut, the radiant cut also has a more uniform sparkle. The key to a pristine emerald shape is in the series of diamond cuts that give it a very clear center, while the radiant has reflecting facets throughout the gem. The differences between radiant cut diamonds and Asscher cut diamonds are similar to those between radiant cuts and emerald cuts. The Asscher, too, uses a series of long step cuts to create a uniform series of reflections, while the radiant's sparkle and fire is closer to the brilliance of a round gem with its greater number of smaller facets. Radiant cut gems also have smaller trims on the corners, whereas Asscher cut diamonds have strong trims that give them an almost octagonal shape. Drew’s diamond is also set in a lovely ring. At Roman Jewelers, custom-making a ring like this would be the way to go. An extra special touch, even, would be to take some of the diamonds in the band from an old ring of Mom’s or Grandma’s to combine all that is special about this special time in life.
Central NJ Engagement Ring Trends
Christmas and New Year’s are the most popular times to get engaged, and many “guys” came into Roman Jewelers to do their shopping this year. So far, we don’t have any requests for returns, so the proposals must have gone well! Furthermore, the rings must have been well received by the ladies—which is fabulous news. Maybe all of those hints paid off!
But really, his hard work, research, and decision to team up with a Roman Jewelers sales consultant ensured a great choice and a happy fiancée. So, here’s the report on what was hot in Central Jersey!
The flurry of engagement ring purchases in our stores seemed to align with fashion trends reported by national trade magazines and celebrity news—a return to more traditional, albeit quite large, colorless or near-colorless diamonds.
Here in Central New Jersey, we found that the average center diamond purchased this season was slightly larger than 1 carat. Most of the diamonds sold were round, but radiant cuts appealed to many and came in as the second most popular choice. Cushion cuts also remained popular, along with pavé and halo settings.
White gold was by far the metal of choice. Many of our customers selected Tacori, Scott Kay, and Simon G. settings because they loved the designer aesthetic and admired the fine detail and craftsmanship of these sought-after designs.
Other couples opted for a custom-designed look. With custom designers on staff and a team of full-time jewelers at both our Flemington and Bridgewater locations, custom design is often the first—and only—choice for couples seeking something truly unique.
Here’s to 2011, many happy couples, and lots of sparkle!
