Six Steps To Grow A Diamond: The Science Behind Lab-Grown Diamonds
Welcome to another deep dive into the scintillating world of diamonds (see what I did there?). Today, we're going to explore the incredible journey of creating diamonds by taking you behind the scenes through a step-by-step process.
These dazzling gemstones have gained popularity in recent years due to their combination of striking beauty and friendly price point. To the naked eye, natural mined diamonds and lab diamonds are extremely similar, with lab diamonds even being able to pass a diamond tester! Talk about a carbon copy! Okay, enough with the diamond puns...
Lab-grown diamonds (also known as lab-created diamonds, man-made diamonds, engineered diamonds, and cultured diamonds) are generated in highly controlled laboratory settings using advanced technological processes that mimic the conditions that diamonds naturally develop in beneath the Earth's crust in the mantle.
These lab-created diamonds are made up of genuine carbon atoms organized in a diamond crystal structure. They have the same visual and chemical qualities as natural diamonds (down to the atomic level) since they are manufactured of the same substance, carbon!
So, grab a cup of coffee or your favorite beverage, and let's dive into this captivating journey through the scientific process of creating lab-grown diamonds. By the end, you’ll be well versed in the incredible process involved. 6 steps to creating a lab-grown diamond, here we come!
Step 1: The Seed
Every diamond needs a seed to grow, just like a plant needs a seed to sprout. In the case of lab-grown diamonds, this seed is a small diamond fragment or a carbon source. Known as the "diamond seed," this is the foundation upon which the entire growth process depends. The diamond seed is placed in a specialized chamber, often made of high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) equipment or a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor. Both methods have their unique advantages, but the outcome remains the same: a controlled environment to encourage diamond growth.
Step 2: The Growth Atmosphere
Creating an environment conducive to diamond growth is essential. In the HPHT method, the chamber contains the diamond seed, a mixture of carbon source material, and a catalyst, which kickstarts the growth process. The chamber is then heated to extremely high temperatures, similar to conditions deep within the Earth’s mantle where natural diamonds form over billions of years.
For perspective, the pressure involved is equivalent to over 4,000 adult elephants sitting on your foot! The heat exceeds that of molten lava, around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. In the CVD method, carbon-rich gases such as methane and hydrogen are introduced into the chamber and heated. Carbon atoms accumulate layer by layer on the diamond seed, growing the diamond slowly.
After about 4 weeks, the lab-grown diamonds are fully formed. This is somewhat similar to 3D printing, where layers are gradually added until the final structure emerges. The result is a rough diamond ready for the next stage.
Step 3: The Magic of Crystal Growth
During this step, carbon atoms arrange themselves in a crystal lattice structure, layer by layer, onto the diamond seed. This process can take several weeks to a few months depending on the desired size. The growth is closely monitored to ensure quality and avoid defects, making lab-grown diamonds highly consistent compared to natural diamonds.
This allows for made-to-order diamonds that are free of the inclusions commonly found in natural diamonds formed over billions of years.
Step 4: Precision and Cutting
Once the diamond reaches the desired size, expert gem cutters carefully examine the rough stone and determine the best way to cut it for maximum brilliance. Cutting is a precise art that allows light to reflect and refract within the diamond, creating the sparkle we love. Lab-created diamonds cut properly shine just like natural ones.
Fun fact: the only substance capable of cutting a diamond is another diamond, ranking 10/10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
Step 5: Polishing and Faceting
After cutting, the diamond is polished. Facets are carefully created on the diamond's surface, allowing light to bounce and produce stunning sparkle. The number, size, and placement of facets are crucial in determining the diamond's fire and brilliance. Well-cut lab-grown diamonds match the sparkle of natural diamonds while being cost-effective.
Step 6: Grading and Certification
Like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds undergo grading and certification. Gemological laboratories evaluate color, clarity, carat weight, and cut. Certifications from GIA or IGI provide assurance of quality.
Step 7: Just Kidding, All Done!
From a tiny diamond seed thinner than a human hair to a breathtaking faceted gemstone, each step showcases the dedication and craftsmanship of lab-grown diamonds. These diamonds offer elegance, beauty, and ethical benefits over mined diamonds. Whether for an engagement ring or other fine jewelry, lab-grown diamonds are true diamonds made of pure carbon and are a product of both science and artistry.
I hope you enjoyed this blog as much as I did writing it. Until next time, keep exploring the fascinating world of diamonds and gemstones. Remember, diamonds are not only a symbol of forever but also a testament to human innovation!
Lab-Grown Diamonds--Understanding Myths & Misconceptions
Hello there, diamond aficionados! We're delving into the intriguing world of lab-grown diamonds today. These sparklers have made waves in the jewelry industry in recent years, giving diamond lovers an alternative to natural, mined diamonds. However, as their popularity has grown, numerous myths and misconceptions have emerged. But don't worry, we're here to separate reality from fiction and dispel these lab-grown diamond myths.
What are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Before we refute any lab grown diamond myths, let's first define "lab-grown diamonds". Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are diamonds cultivated under controlled, lab conditions. Unlike natural diamonds, which develop over billions of years deep under the Earth's crust, these jewels are created in laboratories using modern technology, in a matter of weeks.
Let us now contrast lab-grown diamonds with natural diamonds.
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and visually identical to mined diamonds, exhibiting identical physical features at an atomic level. Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical makeup, crystal structure, and brilliance as natural diamonds. The main difference is that one is mined and the other is created in a lab. The time in producing lab-grown diamonds is another huge difference. It only takes a few weeks to produce the lab-grown diamond where natural diamonds take billions of years. And with technology improving, the time required to produce a lab-grown diamond is getting even shorter. Another huge difference is the "p" word many people associate with purchasing a diamond...price! If all factors are equal (carat weight, cut, color and clarity), lab diamonds are significantly less expensive than a natural diamond. It really boils down to your personal preference and what you are looking for!
To throw additional insight on the process, lab-grown diamonds are made utilizing a basic growth process in one of two forms: High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both processes mimic the natural diamond development process, but in considerably less time. The lab diamond process takes a diamond seed (also known as a diamond simulant) and subjects it to the same extreme heat and pressure that forms diamonds beneath the earth. The clear cut difference here is that these conditions (in a lab diamond) are conducted in a controlled environment and do not take billions of years but rather a few weeks. Okay, now that we have laid the groundwork and are beginning to consider ourselves diamond experts, let's get in to the "meat and potatoes of why we are here...
Debunking Common Myths and Misconceptions
Myth 1: "Lab-grown diamonds are fake and of lower quality."
Let's get this out of the way immediately. The term "fake" diamonds is misleading. Because they are chemically similar to natural diamonds, the word "synthetic" is not appropriate. In fact, without sophisticated equipment, the average customer has difficulty distinguishing between the two types. It's like looking for a diamond in the rough...not easy! Diamond puns aside let's continue...
In terms of quality, lab-grown diamonds fulfill the same stringent criteria as mined diamonds. They are graded with the same clarity, color, cut, and carat weight as a mined diamond. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and other respectable grading organizations offer grading reports for lab-grown diamonds in the same way that they do for mined diamonds. Bottom Line: lab-grown diamonds are not "fake" or of a lower overall quality...they are simply made differently!
Myth 2: "Lab-grown diamonds look different from natural diamonds."
This myth usually arises due to a lack of knowledge regarding lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds appear to be almost identical to real natural diamonds. They have the same brilliance, fire, and scintillation, making it nearly impossible to tell them apart with the naked eye. As I mentioned before, even professionals use specific equipment to distinguish the lab-grown from natural diamonds.
Professional verification devices can detect the laboratory-grown diamonds. These instruments use a range of specific equipment to tell the difference between natural diamonds developed over billions of years in the Earth and synthetic diamonds formed over a few weeks in a manufacturing setting.
It is virtually impossible to tell the difference between a laboratory-grown diamond and its natural counterpart with a naked eye. When you dive a little deeper, diamond crystals develop differently in nature than they do in a laboratory, hence their grain patterns, like those of stones and wood, differ. That is one of the factors in allowing us to distinguish the lab-grown diamonds from natural mined diamonds.
Myth 3: "Lab-grown diamonds are not as durable as natural diamonds."
This could not be further from the truth. Lab-grown diamonds are as hard and durable as mined diamonds, attaining a perfect 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. They are as durable and long-lasting as genuine diamonds, making them excellent for everyday use as well as treasured keepsakes.
To add to their legitimacy, lab-grown diamonds are subjected to the same rigorous testing as mined diamonds and their quality can be reported by the same gemological authorities as natural diamonds.
Myth 4: "Lab-grown diamonds are not valuable and will never have a resale market."
This myth is not as black or white as most people perceive it to be. On the one hand, I do not know what the future holds and as things change so rapidly in the diamond industry, even experts in the diamond field can never truly predict what will happen. But all hope is not lost!
That being said, what I can do is speak on the past and current value of lab-created diamonds. With technical advancements happening so rapidly, the manufacturing process of creating lab diamonds is becoming quicker. More companies producing diamonds has resulted in an overproduction of lab diamonds. This has driven the price down significantly. Since their inception, lab-grown diamonds have only decreased in value. Do we know what the future holds? Definitely not. But if the past is any indication of the future of the industry, the value trajectory appears to be pointing downward.
The Environmental and Ethical Side of Lab-Grown Diamonds
One of the most perceived reasons to explore lab-grown diamonds has been their ethical and environmental benefits. However, that topic has become less and less true as time goes on. Allow me to explain...
The amount of energy required to produce lab diamonds and to replicate the immense heat and pressure is incredible. As more and more companies enter the lab-created diamond industry, that energy demand is rising exponentially. What was once thought of as an extremely environmentally sound industry is simply not the case anymore.
On the other hand, the natural diamond industry as a whole has tried very hard to reform how they operate and remove as much conflict from the process of diamond distribution as possible. Under the Kimberly Process (which we should totally do an entire blog on later down the road), the United Nations and World Trade Organization have imposed very strict regulations on the natural rough diamond trade to ensure a "conflict-free" operation.
Bottom Line: what was once a vast gap in ethics between the two types of diamonds, significant changes on both sides of the table have brought the two much closer together than previously believed.
The Economic Aspect of Lab-Grown Diamonds
Let us now discuss the economics of lab-grown diamonds. One of the main worries that buyers have is the price difference between lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds. In general, lab-grown diamonds are much less expensive than natural diamonds, generally costing 20-70% less than mined diamonds of comparable grade and carat weight. This cost-saving benefit provides consumers with additional options, allowing them to acquire bigger or higher-quality diamonds within their budget.
Bottom Line: the lab diamond industry is a "give and take" relationship. While you are able to have a much bigger stone for much less price, you are sacrificing the long term value of the stone itself for something that is mass produced. The choice is yours!
Addressing Consumer Concerns and Misinformation
While it is natural for customers to be concerned when evaluating a new choice, it is critical that those concerns be addressed with facts. Appearance, durability, and long-term value are all fair concerns.
The analogy/question I always love to give potential diamond buyers when it comes to a mined diamond versus a lab diamond is this: would you prefer to own an original and 100% authentic Picasso painting, paying a premium price, or would you like to own a less expensive professionally created rendering of the original painting? Both are beautiful and both serve a clear purpose (in this case, adorning a wall in your home as opposed to a diamond which will be adorning your ring finger). The ultimate difference is that one took time to create from nothing (natural diamond) and one was created in the image of the original (lab- grown diamond). If you can, read this paragraph a second time and let the analogy really sink in. I think it might just help you make the decision that is right for you.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
To wrap up our myth-busting journey, let's address some common questions related to lab-grown diamonds:
1. Are lab-grown diamonds "real" diamonds? Lab-grown diamonds are, in fact, real diamonds with the same properties (chemical composition and physical structure) and same durability as mined diamonds.
2. How can I tell if a diamond is lab-grown or mined? Identifying lab-grown diamonds from mined ones requires specialized equipment; however, reputable jewelers can provide lab reports to confirm a diamond's origin.
3. Are lab-grown diamonds eco-friendly? No, with the increasing energy demand by more and more lab diamond manufacturers entering the industry, what was once considered a very eco-friendly process is simply no longer the case.
4. Are lab-grown diamonds more ethically sourced? No, similar to the "eco-friendly" debate, as it currently stands, lab grown diamonds are no more ethical than diamonds mined from the ground.
5. Can lab-grown diamonds be insured? Yes, lab-grown diamonds can be insured, just like mined diamonds, to protect their value and your investment.
6. Do lab-grown diamonds have resale value? Hard to say as the diamond marketplace is constantly changing. As it currently stands, the resale value of a lab-grown diamond is little. As a result of technical advances in the lab grown diamond industry, the turnaround time for creating a lab-grown diamond is becoming less and less. This is leading to more and more companies entering the market since the barrier to entry gets lower by the day. This is all to say that, as it currently stands, there is an overproduction of lab-grown diamonds in the industry. So what does this all boil down to? The price of lab diamonds is constantly changing (consistently decreasing by the day) so at the moment, lab grown diamonds have little to no resale value.

Overview of Natural Diamonds
Let's begin by talking about a mined diamond, also known as a natural diamond, which is formed deep within the Earth over billions (yes...with a "b") of years. Natural diamonds are created when carbon atoms are subjected to immense heat and extreme pressure deep within the Earth's surface.
The process to form a natural or mined diamond typically takes between 1 and 3 billion years. They are created from carbon atoms that bond together to form a crystal lattice structure, resulting in the hardest known substance on Earth.
The journey of a natural diamond begins with volcanic eruptions, which carry these precious crystals to the planet's's surface, where they are eventually discovered through mining (think of it like a conveyer belt of molten lava that carries the stones upward).
Natural diamonds have captivated humanity for centuries. These exquisite gemstones possess a timeless allure and hold a special place in the world of luxury and romance. When proposing to a loved one, there are not many things more special than a natural diamond, whose beauty is only second to the time it actually takes to create one.
One of the most intriguing aspects of natural diamonds is their remarkable range of colors, clarity, and carat weight. Diamonds are graded using the renowned GIA's (Gemological Institute of America) grading system, the 4Cs: carat, color, clarity, and cut.
Each diamond possesses a unique combination of these characteristics, contributing to its individual beauty and value. Natural diamonds are celebrated for their unparalleled brilliance, scintillation, and fire, which are attributed to their exceptional optical properties.
Natural diamonds have long symbolized love, commitment, and prestige. The rarity and enduring beauty of these gems have made them highly sought after for engagement rings, fine jewelry, and even investment purposes.
The emotional significance and cultural symbolism associated with natural diamonds have solidified their place as a timeless expression of love and a tangible representation of life's most cherished moments, such as an engagement or anniversary.
While natural diamonds are undeniably breathtaking, concerns have been raised about the social and environmental impact of diamond mining (something we will dive a little deeper into in a future blog).
Natural diamonds are some of nature's natural miracles, offering unparalleled beauty and a connection to the Earth's ancient history. Their incredible allure, timeless appeal, and symbolic significance have made them cherished heirlooms and a true treasure.
As technology advances and ethical practices evolve, the diamond industry continues to strive for a balance between the natural wonders of the Earth and the ethical considerations necessary to preserve its beauty for generations to come.
Key Points about Natural Diamonds
Rarity:
Natural diamonds are incredibly rare, which contributes to their high value. The process of their formation is a geological marvel that occurs under extreme conditions of heat and pressure.
Imperfections:
Natural diamonds often have imperfections, known as inclusions, which can affect their clarity and value. Inclusions are formed during the diamond's growth process and are unique to each stone.
Cost:
Due to their rarity and the complex process of mining, natural diamonds tend to be more expensive than lab-grown diamonds.
The “Love” Factor:
Many people are drawn to the romanticism and historical significance associated with natural diamonds. They hold a timeless allure and have been universal symbols of love and commitment for centuries
Overview of Lab-Grown Diamonds
Let's shift our focus to the other side of this diamond-studded table: lab-grown diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds and are similar to natural diamonds at a molecular and atomic level.
As the name suggests, these diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments that mimic the natural conditions required for diamond formation (mainly heat and pressure). While there are a finite number of natural diamonds within the Earth, lab-grown diamonds can be (and are currently) created in much greater quantities.
Lab-grown diamonds possess the same captivating sparkle, durability, and clarity as natural diamonds. Gemologists also categorize a lab-grown diamond using the same 4Cs as a natural diamond: carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. The color range varies from completely colorless to fancy colored diamonds, offering a wide array of choices to suit personal preferences.
One of the significant advantages of lab-grown diamonds is their ethical and environmental appeal. Unlike natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds do not require mining, reducing the negative ecological impact. Additionally, they are free from the controversies surrounding conflict diamonds, ensuring a responsible and socially conscious choice.
While lab-grown diamonds share many characteristics with their natural counterparts, they do have some distinctions. The resale value of lab-grown diamonds may be lower, reflecting the market's current perception.
However, as awareness and demand for lab-grown diamonds grow, this landscape may change. It's important to select a reputable jeweler to ensure the quality and authenticity of the diamond.
Key Points about Lab-Grown Diamonds
Creation Process:
To create diamonds, one of two processes are generally used: High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). These processes involve replicating the extreme heat and pressure conditions found deep within the Earth.
The same parameters are used to create both types of diamonds, with lab-grown diamonds having those conditions artificially created in a laboratory setting.
Chemical Composition:
Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition and structure as natural diamonds, consisting of pure carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure. This means they exhibit the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds.
Clarity and Purity:
Lab-grown diamonds are often praised and admired for their exceptional clarity. Since they’re created under controlled conditions, they typically have fewer inclusions compared to natural diamonds. This can result in a higher clarity grade and a more visually appealing stone.
Cost-Effectiveness:
One of the most significant advantages of lab-grown diamonds is their affordability. As they can be produced in a controlled environment, in greater quantities and much more quickly, their supply is more abundant, resulting in lower prices compared to their natural counterparts.
Ethical and Environmental Considerations:
Lab-grown diamonds are generally considered more sustainable and ethical as they do not require diamond mining, which can have negative environmental and social impacts. This is a topic we will dive deeper into in a future blog so be on the lookout!
Key Similarities between Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds
Beauty and Brilliance:
Both lab-grown and natural diamonds exhibit exceptional beauty and brilliance. Their physical properties, such as brilliance and scintillation, are virtually identical on a molecular level.
Hardness:
Diamonds, regardless of their origin, are the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth. They score a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Here’s a fun fact for you! A diamond is so hard that the only substance that can scratch it...is another diamond! Speaking of scratching...
Durability:
Both lab-grown and natural diamonds are incredibly durable and resistant to scratching. This durability makes them ideal for everyday wear as engagement rings or other jewelry pieces.
Are Lab Diamonds As Beautiful As Natural Diamonds?
The lab-grown diamond is the exact same as diamond mined from the earth. Lab-grown diamonds have identical characteristics to Earth mined diamonds, except that the lab-grown are grown in the lab environment. They possess similar chemical physical and optical properties to mining diamonds and exhibit the same fire scintillating and glittering.
Lab-grown diamonds have a crystalline structure identical to natural diamonds. It's just where the two are formed that separates the two. Visually, nothing is different. Diamonds are produced from laboratories and natural products in a range of colors, textures and clarities. Natural diamonds contain trace levels of nitrogen, but lab grown diamonds have none. This is actually one of the indicators gemologists use to determine whether a diamond is lab created or natural.
As always, it’s important to understand that the choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences and needs. Natural diamonds offer timeless appeal and hold rich historical significance, while lab-grown diamonds provide a more affordable and ethically conscious alternative without compromising on aesthetic (i.e., a beautifully looking stone).
Whether you choose a natural or lab-grown diamond, it's essential to consider things like budget, personal values, and the specific characteristics of the diamond itself. Being that the two types of stones are optically identical, the choice falls on your (yes, you) very capable shoulders.
So, ask yourself...would you be interested in a natural diamond which was mined from Mother Earth and has a sparkle that took the planet millions of years to create?
On the other hand, would you like a stone of the same brilliance and chemical makeup that has much less resale value and "rarity factor". The good news in all of this is that there is truly no wrong answer. It is like having every flavor of ice cream in your freezer...no matter what you choose, it will be the right choice for you and your loved one.
Diamonds are a timeless symbol of love, devotion, and commitment, and the choice between the two types should reflect what resonates most with you. When searching for something like, for example, a diamond ring, what matters most is which type of stone resonates with you and your loved one as a symbol of your love.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions also! Most jewelers (including your local jeweler) can provide invaluable information to help guide you towards your perfect stone.

Considerations:
Perceived value: Some people may not consider lab-grown diamonds to be as valuable or special as natural diamonds, which can be a concern for those who place a high value on tradition and emotional significance.
Limited availability: While lab-grown diamonds are becoming more widely available, they are still less common than natural diamonds, which can limit options for those who want a specific size, shape, or color.
Resale value: Lab-grown diamonds are a newer phenomenon, and it remains to be seen whether they will hold their value over time.
Ultimately, the decision to choose a natural or lab-grown diamond is a personal one, and you should choose the type of diamond that feels right for you based on your values, priorities, and budget and the type of experience you prefer.
FYIs on Grading of a Lab Grown Diamond:
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) does grade lab-grown diamonds. In fact, the GIA has been at the forefront of creating a standardized system for grading lab-grown diamonds, which includes the same 4Cs (cut, clarity, color, and carat weight) used for grading natural diamonds.
The GIA's grading reports for lab-grown diamonds are similar to those for natural diamonds, and they provide consumers with important information about the quality and characteristics of the diamond they are purchasing. GIA grading reports for lab-grown diamonds include information about the diamond's origin (whether it is natural or lab-grown), as well as detailed information about the diamond's 4Cs and other factors, such as fluorescence and polish.
If you're considering purchasing a lab-grown diamond, it's important to ensure that it has been graded by a reputable organization like the GIA to ensure that you are getting a quality diamond, and work with a jeweler you know and like.

However, what other piece of jewelry do you wear as often as your engagement ring?!Let's talk today about how you can keep your engagement ring's durability and for it to look great every day.Diamond rings, in general, and diamond engagement rings are meant to be enjoyed! That’s why so many of us wear our jewelry every day. When you wear your diamond ring this much, it becomes subject to wear and tear. Every time you bump, rub or scratch your jewelry you may be causing some harm. This happens mostly with rings…especially, engagement rings.
Purchasing an Engagement Ring that will last a lifetime.
When you're shopping for an engagement ring, keep in mind that this fine piece of jewelry will be worn every day. It should be comfortable, flattering, and durable enough to withstand the rigors of daily wear. Of course, you also want the ring to be a symbol of your love and commitment, which is why many couples choose a diamond engagement ring.Diamonds are the hardest natural material on Earth, so they're very resistant to scratching and chipping. Diamonds' resistance does not mean it is indestructible. Diamonds can break, get scratched, or be chipped. That means that you will have to take good care of your diamond and your engagement ring so that you will be able to enjoy your ring for years to come.

Diamond shapes
Round and oval diamonds
Diamond Shapes
Round diamonds are the most popular shape for engagement rings, and they are also the most durable. The round shape means that there are no sharp corners or edges that can get caught on things or break. As such, diamonds with no corners (round and oval shapes) or smooth corners (cushion cut) have less of a chance to be damaged.Princess cutPrincess cut diamonds are also very durable, but they have more edges than a round diamond, so they require a bit more attention.Emerald, pear, and marquise shape diamondsEmerald, pear, and marquise diamonds have pointed corners that can sometimes chip or break if they are hit hard enough. So if you're looking for a durable engagement ring, that is something you may want to consider. Speak with your jewelry consultant about a setting that will not only look lovely, but perhaps protect your diamond as well.
Metals
Precious Metal: Gold
When you're shopping for engagement rings, it's important to think about the durability of the setting. The setting is what holds the diamond in place, so you want to make sure it's strong enough to stand up to everyday wear and tear. 14K and 18K gold are both popular choices for engagement ring settings, but they differ in terms of strength and durability. To understand the strength and durability of metals most often used in engagement rings, let's talk about metallurgy - a study of metals - and briefly discuss the two metals most often used in jewelry making-- gold and platinum.GoldGold has been a popular choice for engagement rings for centuries, being a symbol of wealth and success. As such, the engagement ring setting made of gold conveys status and prestige. With all these benefits, it's no wonder that gold is such a popular choice for engagement rings. There are many reasons for this.Gold is an enduring metal that will last a lifetime, and it can be polished and repolished to restore its original luster. Gold is also a very malleable metal, which means it can be shaped into a wide variety of designs. In addition, gold is hypoallergenic, meaning it is unlikely to cause skin irritation or other allergic reactions (unless you are allergic to the metals in the alloys - a metal or a combination of metals added to the pure gold to make the metal more durable. And finally, gold is a timeless metal that looks beautiful with any type of stone. Whether you're looking for a classic solitaire or a modern halo setting, gold can provide the perfect backdrop for your engagement ring.Let's look at the composition of gold most often used for engagement rings. Pure gold is 24K gold. Pure gold is very soft and usually is not suitable for jewelry. 18K gold contains 75% of pure gold and 25% of alloys. 14K gold contains 58.3% of pure gold and 41.7% of alloys. The purer gold in a metal, the softer the metal is. That makes 18K gold softer and more susceptible to scratches and dents than 14K gold. 14K gold is less pure, so it's harder and more resistant to damage.Whether you choose yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold setting, gold is simply beautiful, giving engagement rings a timeless elegance. Just keep in mind that white gold starts as pure yellow gold and obtains its white color by adding specific alloys. Because of that, the white gold will eventually show its yellow tint and would need to be rhodium-plated to keep its white color.PlatinumPlatinum is a much rarer metal than gold, and it is also more durable and hypoallergenic. In addition, platinum has a natural silvery-white color that complements any diamond or gemstone. While gold engagement rings are certainly beautiful, they simply cannot match the beauty and prestige of a platinum engagement ring.Since we are talking about engagement rings' durability, platinum is extremely durable, meaning that it will withstand everyday wear and tear far better than gold. Platinum engagement rings are so tough that they can be passed down through generations as family heirlooms. So if you're looking for a high-quality ring that will last a lifetime, platinum may be the perfect metal for you.Ultimately, the best metal for engagement ring settings depends on your personal preferences and budget

Engagement ring styles
Three-Stone Engagement Ring
An engagement ring's style can affect a ring's durability. When it comes to engagement rings, there are three main styles: solitaire, halo, and three-stone. Perhaps, you chose a custom engagement ring that does not fall into one of the traditional ring styles. There are only two aspects to a perfect engagement ring style; the beauty of the ring and its comfort and durability. Each style has its unique look, and each one comes with its own set of pros and cons in terms of durability. For example, solitaire engagement rings have a classic, timeless look that will never go out of style. However, because there is only one stone in the setting, a bit of care is required.Halo engagement rings are also quite popular, and they offer the added benefit of extra protection for the center stone.Three-stone engagement rings are another option, and they tend to be quite durable due to the simple setting. However, because three-stone engagement rings have three stones instead of just one, it is a good idea to have your jeweler periodically check all three stones to make sure they are nice a tight. The engagement ring's style is an important consideration when choosing an engagement ring. It is important to think about how you will wear your ring and what type of setting will best suit your lifestyle. If you are looking for a classic and timeless
Engagement rings are well loved, so require some care
Over time, any engagement ring is subject to wear and tear. Even the most well-made ring can start to show signs of damage after years of daily use. When you notice the damage that your engagement ring starts showing, do not blame yourself for it. Wear and tear is a normal process resulting from years of wearing and enjoying the ring. The good news is that there are some easy steps you can take to help keep your ring in great condition. By following these simple tips, you can help ensure that your engagement ring will retain its beauty for many years to come.
Tips to keep your diamond engagement ring in great shape longer
Make sure to remove your ring before doing any activities that could potentially damage it, such as gardening, going to the gym where you might be lifting weights, or cooking.
Be careful not to expose your ring to harsh chemicals, such as bleach or detergent.
When not in use, store your ring in a soft cloth pouch or jewelry box.
Have your ring professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year, or better yet, every six months.
Have your prongs that hold your diamonds professionally checked to make sure the prongs are wearing properly and are protecting your diamond from getting lost.
At Roman Jewelers, we strongly encourage our clients to bring their rings into the store every six months or so, to allow us to check the prongs to ensure they are wearing properly. We will also clean your jewelry while you wait, which always results in the same “Wow!” reaction. How to Clean your Diamond Engagement Ring at Home
One of the best ways to clean your engagement ring is also the simplest—and that’s just using soap and water. Mix a mild solution of dishwashing liquid and warm water and soak your ring for a few minutes. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away any dirt or grime that’s accumulated on the setting or diamond. Brush the inside of the ring and the area under your center diamond. Rinse your ring thoroughly with warm water and dry it with a soft lint-free cloth. You should never use harsh chemicals, such as bleach or ammonia, to clean your engagement ring. These chemicals can damage the metal and setting, and they may also dull the diamond. Abrasive cleaners, such as toothpaste or baking soda, can also damage the metal and setting. If you need to clean your ring more thoroughly, we recommend taking it to a professional jeweler.
Store Your Diamond Ring Carefully
Store your Jewelry when not wearing it
When you’re not wearing your engagement ring, store it in a soft cloth pouch or jewelry box. This will help protect the ring from scratches. Do not store your ring in a jewelry box next to other diamond jewelry as diamonds scratch diamonds. That is why placing your engagement ring into a soft cloth is recommended. This would also prevent the diamond in your engagement ring from scratching other pieces of jewelry in your jewelry box.
Have Your Ring Professionally Cleaned and Inspected Regularly
We recommend having your engagement ring professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year, or better yet, every six months. This will help ensure that the ring is in good condition and that any damage is caught early. At Roman Jewelers, we offer complimentary cleaning and inspection.By following these simple tips, you can help keep your engagement ring looking brand new for many years to come.
Insure your Engagement Ring
An engagement ring is a big investment, so you want to do everything you can to protect it. That's why insuring your engagement ring is a smart choice. Your ring will be covered in the event of loss, theft, or damage. The cost of ring insurance varies depending on the value of your ring, but it's a small price to pay for peace of mind. There are a few different ways to get insurance for an engagement ring, and the best option for you will depend on your circumstances. Many homeowners’ insurance policies will cover engagement rings, so if you have existing coverage, that may be the simplest option. You can also purchase a separate insurance policy for your engagement ring. This can be a good choice if you don't have other insurance coverage or if you want more comprehensive protection. Whichever option you choose, insuring your engagement ring is an important step in protecting your investment.
What does insurance cover?
But what does ring insurance cover? In most cases, engagement ring insurance will cover the cost of the ring if it is lost, stolen, or damaged. Some policies may also cover the cost of repairs if the ring is damaged. However, it's important to read the details of your policy carefully before you buy it, as some policies have exclusions and limits on what they will cover. For example, some policies might not cover engagement rings that are lost or stolen while you are traveling.

Find the Right Jewelry Store
Find a qualified jeweler to work on your heirloom ring

The right jeweler has the experience and expertise to help you create a piece of jewelry that not only looks amazing but will also stand the test of time. Have the Ring Professionally Appraised and Diamonds Graded
Get the family heirloom ring appraised. This will help you to learn the financial value of the ring as well as give you a better idea of what type of setting and piece of jewelry would best suit your needs.
Ask for the center diamond and the semi-mount to be appraised
You might ask the appraiser to separately appraise the family center diamond in the heirloom engagement ring, especially if the diamond has not been graded before or if there is no appraisal that you can locate. Understanding what you have will greatly help you in where you ultimately want to go with your heirloom ring.
Have the Diamond Checked for Chips and Damage
Check your diamonds for chips and damage
You need to learn all the small details about your family heirloom. The more information you have, the easier it will be for you and your jeweler to work with the existing ring. Why is that important? Because you might decide to replace the chipped or damaged diamonds with new diamonds that would match the rest of the diamonds in the setting in size, color, and clarity.
Deciding What to Do with the Heirloom Engagement Ring and/or the Center Diamond
Let’s dive in a little deeper and discuss options and ideas of how you can use your family ring. The great news is that you can do anything, from a custom engagement ring to maybe even an entirely new piece of custom jewelry.
Let's talk about the “what” (as in, what to do with a family ring) and the “why” (as in why would you want to do anything with that family ring). What is all the fuss about the inherited engagement ring or the family diamond in it? Is a family diamond any more valuable than a diamond of the same carat weight, cut, clarity, and color as a diamond you could go out and buy today? The answer to that question is not as black and white as you might think.Learn more about the value and quality of diamonds
Whether you decide to remove the center diamond from its setting and create a new, custom engagement ring or repurpose it into another piece of custom jewelry, here are a few ideas of what you can do with your family heirloom. From doing nothing with the ring and wearing it as is, to creating a custom designed piece of jewelry.
Do Absolutely Nothing!
Let's start with not to changing anything in the family engagement ring. This might sound like a cop-out but, sometimes, the best thing you can do is to leave beautiful things as they are. If your family diamond is in good condition and you are happy with the way the ring looks, then there is no reason to change a thing! Just wear the engagement ring as is and enjoy! Or save the engagement ring for your next custom jewelry endeavor if that would suit and serve you better.
Reset the Diamond into a New Setting
One option is to reset the center diamond from your family diamond engagement ring into a new setting. This is a great way to update an old, damaged, or dated setting. Or perhaps you do not like the setting style. By resetting the diamond into a new setting, you will keep the tradition of wearing an engagement ring alive.
Perhaps, you prefer a setting to be in white gold to the one in yellow gold. You can keep the central round-cut diamond but instead of a halo, you can use those smaller diamonds to pave the band.
Design a New Custom, one-of-a-kind Engagement Ring ora Pendant, a Pair of Earrings or, Perhaps, a Cocktail Ring
Design a custom one-of-a-kind ring
This is probably the most popular option as it allows you to keep the tradition of the family engagement ring alive while also creating something unique and tailor-made for you. Take the round-cut diamond in all its brilliance and use it as the nucleus of a brand-new engagement ring. Change anything from the setting to the metals and everything in-between but as it stands, you know you have your diamond shining with a beautiful history.
Now you are ready to create something stunning and, at the same time, nostalgic,I’m going to present a few ideas for you to hopefully spark some inspiration as you read.
Keep in mind that, because this is all preference and individual taste, there is no wrong answer! Consult with your jeweler, talk about what inspires you and let your imagination run wild! The sky is truly the limit when it comes to what can be done, design-wise. But before you start working with your jeweleron designing that special one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry, please download and read this e-guide titled Custom Jewelry Guide by Roman Jewelers. Free guide to Custom Jewelry Design.
Now it's time to get really creative! One thing's for sure. Your family will be happy to keep the heirloom piece of jewelry in the family, and for the family engagement ring to continue its journey.
In my previous example, we have taken our engagement ring and changed it...into another engagement ring. But what if we broke outside that box and instead, created multiple pieces of jewelry from our initial family engagement ring and the center diamond?
The smaller diamonds that once served as a halo around the round-cut diamond can serve many purposes to give you even more flexibility. You have the option to get creative with your jeweler to incorporate them into your new pair of gold earrings. You can create a custom one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry such as a necklace, bracelet, or a cocktail ring. You'llbe repurposing everything in your family engagement ring: the metal, the center diamond, and the small diamonds in the halo surrounding the center stone.
As you can see, there are a multitude of options when it comes to what you can do with an inherited diamond or a piece of heirloom jewelry. And, regardless of repurposing, your one piece offamily jewelry into one, two, or even three custom jewelry items, one constant needs to remain at the forefront of your mind...the diamonds.
The diamonds in your family jewelry are what makes the piece so special and unique. After all, diamonds are not only incredibly rare but they are also incredibly beautiful. They have been used throughout history to signify love, power, and status. So, when you are thinking about repurposing your family’s diamonds, make sure you are doing it in a way that is not only creative but also respectful to the diamonds and their history.
Determine what Metals you would like to Use
This is determined, largely, by what piece of jewelry you intend to craft. A plethora of possibilities is at your fingertips as there will always be a precious metal to accompany and complement the design. 14K or 18K gold in white, yellow or pink colors. Or maybe platinum?Possibly a combination of different metals?
To Sum Up...
I hope this article has given you some ideas of what you can do with your family heirloom engagement ring. Whether you decide to reset the diamond, create a new piece of jewelry, or simply leave it as is, the most important thing is that you are happy.
I don’t want you to think for a second that you are doing a disservice to the family jewelry by repurposing it in some fashion. By doing that, youare taking a precious diamond engagement ring that has been in your family for years and giving it a new life for generations to come.
Follow your heart and you will be overjoyed with the outcome. Think of the journey your family diamond or engagement ring took to end up in your possession and the result will be something that shows respect and love for those who came before you.
